What To Look For In a Moving Estimate

When planning a big move, receiving a good moving estimate is a key step to success. A moving estimate will provide you with a quote of what your move will approximately cost you. While estimate information will differ between moving companies, there are some important aspects that are worth paying attention to.

It is recommended that moving estimates should not be done over the phone. Instead, schedule estimates with companies who walk through the location first. Most companies will base their quotes off of the individual pieces they will be moving, and this cannot be done accurately without meeting in person.

One thing that is important to keep in mind is the type of estimate you are receiving. There are three main types of estimates: binding, non-binding, and binding-not-to-exceed.

A binding estimate will ensure that the quote you receive is final and not subject to change.

A non-binding estimate is one in which your final cost may differ from your original quote, possibly increasing or decreasing.

Lastly, a binding-not-to-exceed estimate will provide you with a quote that, post-move, cannot increase but can either remain the same or decrease.

Whether the moving company charges by weight or cubic feet is not too important, but the type of moving estimate they give you is worth taking into consideration. Non-binding quotes are risky, and usually, companies that use them are not worth it. Binding and binding-not-to-exceed estimates tend to be best.

Depending on what you are moving and even just your personal preference, you may want to purchase insurance. Moving companies will usually offer a few different types of coverage. Be sure to consider all of your options and choose the one that will best fit your move.

You will most likely receive a bill of lading when you decide on a moving company and accept their estimate. Be sure to look over your bill closely and make sure all information is correct before signing off.

In the end, chose a moving company that you feel you can most trust.
